Need Your Help

We have a Jewish wedding to go to in May and we were told that its a black tie only wedding. So I went and rented a tux the other day. All black, with a black vest and not a bow tie but a regular tie. So my question to you is, should I wear the vest or not? My mom doesn’t think so and should I change the tie to a bow tie?

Thanks for your help.

Is it a wide tie like an ascot, Tommy, or just regular width like you'd wear to the office? If it's one of the wide ones, I think you can get away with it if it's a good material--many people prefer them to bowties nowadays. If you wear that tie, you need the vest: they're really made to go together and look super-classy. If you wear a bowtie, you won't need a vest.

Wear the vest and keep the tie- I find that look so sexy and classy.

Is it a plain black vest? Then wear it and wear the regular tie....oh...and Sandy must buy a gorgeous new dress and shoes!

My wife and I just went to a black-tie Jewish wedding a couple of weeks ago. I wore the vest with the bowtie. This seemed to be the most common arrangement (mostly without the turned-up pointy collar option). Not a lot of regular ties, but there were some. For reference, this was a VERY large (470 guest) wedding, in Beverly Hills, CA. Hope this helps, email if you have questions!

I agree with your mom. I think a tux looks better with a bowtie. I know that vests are in style now but to me, they look a little too "member of the wedding court".

I don't know a thing about tux's and bow ties sorry. Oh and I have yet to see a Jewish wedding that is under 470 people! LOL
