Brave New World / Airframe

Airframe
Saturday was a very interesting day. I decided that I needed to get the oil changed in both cars, so I drove up to the 10 min lube place and after 2 hours I finished the book below. This was another one of those books that I had in paperback and just couldn’t seem to stay awake to read and after listening to it, I understand why. The book is set in some future where there is no war, hunger, unhappiness or anything else that can be seen as bad. People are conditioned from the beginning about how they are going to feel and also what their social standing is going to be, but even with all the great things they can do to achieve this, they are still some of the top society people that think for themselves. One such guy is upset because he is never alone in this society, but meets a guy from a savage society (kind of like it is now, but more early Indian like) that is always alone and never include in the group. He is brought back into a world where everyone is always happy and never really thinks for themselves and he can’t understand why its like that. I won’t ruin the ending, but it was a very interesting look at what someone who wrote it in 1932 would think the future would be like, without war and unhappiness and all things not good. Its a tough read and if you have nothing else to read, I would say at least give it a try.

After all the cars and the rest of my out of the house stuff was done for the day, I was able to finish another book I was reading. This was another great book from Michael Crichton. A plane on a routine flight from Hong Kong to the US suddenly loses and gains altitude, but is finally landed safely. But 3 passengers are dead and 57 more are injured. The the job of the airplane manufacture to find out what happened with the plane, the only problem is they have a week to do it or it will hurt a sale of planes to China. Casey was just promoted to VP and has the job to lead the discovery team, but she is finding that other forces are working against here. I really love the way that Michael rights, he keeps me on the edge of my seat and this book was no less exciting. I would recommend this book as well as anything else written by him.

Since you like Crichton, have you read Prey yet? If not, as a techno-geek (takes one to know one), you should like it.
