It was 25 years ago and my life was going to change forever. As a kid I only knew that TV had 6 channels and was amazed that I never had too much of a problem finding something to watch. Now comes the summer of 1981 when my family is getting upgraded to cable a whole whopping 75 channels, how are we ever going to find time to watch all that and now 25 years later I have over 300 channels and find it very hard to find anything to watch on TV anymore, but as I was cruising through the guide I now have to use and am lost when I go to houses that don’t have it, I ran across a show on VH1 Classic called MTV’s 1st hour. Well being the digital age and all, I set it to record the show from 9 to 10 because I wasn’t going to give up on watching my Tigers before then. At 11 I turned it on and it was a look at the first hour (more like a sneak peek of things to come) of MTV ever, which is the one channel I couldn’t wait to be added to our cable back in 1981. After watching I was reminding how music and videos have change since then and how the channel itself has really changed. If you want to see videos anymore you have to have MTV hits, because not even MTV2 shows videos.
But the one big thing I gleaned from this show and the real point of this post is that on August 1 at Midnight VH1 Classic is going to show the first day of MTV as it was back in 1981, which seems so long ago now. I know will be up for some of it, but will check back through the day when I can to check out and remember what my life was like back then. So mark your calendars and join me in the fun.
